Call Me Loyal

Double breasted woolen peacoat with waistband detailing all on a green, purple and black hounds tooth. Oh yes...

I am a firm beleiver that I have guardian angel of shopping watching over me. Occasionally she steps in to help me make my important purchasing questions. This is usually "To buy or not to buy". She was definitely with me on Friday the 22nd October 2010 on Brunswick St when I found this beauty.

I first saw this coat on my Derby trip to Adelaide earlier this year. You have probably realised that I am a sucker for a good coat at the best of times- but show me one in my derby team colours and I'm more than sold. That's where the story would end- except that on the day I saw this coat in Myers I had already exhausted my shopping budget for our short stay. I did actually contemplate not eating for the final day and a half I was there to afford it- but there was an after party in between and one was going to require alcohol. I begrudgingly left the store without the coat and spent the next 36 hours trying to work out if there was a way I could take it home with me. Sadly there wasn't and I came back to Auckland coat less.

Fast forward 3 and a half months and I'm back in Australia. (In the epic factory shop I talked about in my previous post no less) There she was. On a distant rack I spotted her across a crowded shop floor. My beautiful Mascara Massacre coat! Not only did they have my size in stock but the price tag told me it was only $89.00. MUCH less than the original $229.00 I first saw it priced at. Obviously I grabbed it (with 2 hands) and holding back my excitement as best I could (I was on my own and had nobody to squeal at) I started to look at the other racks around me. As I was doing so- one of the shop girls came over to the rack to further mark down the price. I kid you not. I was already more than happy to pay $89.00 for it and then didn't even have to! I left that shop one very very happy Fliss and my wallet was only $60.00 lighter. SCORE.

The other point worth mentioning of this entire experience was that it was slightly over 29 degrees that day and I was already sweltering having worn tights and boots out on my maiden shopping voyage on this trip. (long story but lets summarise in that I didn't trust the weather reports after being freezing my entire stay roughly this time last year...) I did actually think for a little while that I was going to melt. I already had a decent amount of shopping bags to carry and then had a woollen coat to lug around too. It was the weirdest and most perfect day to buy a Winter coat.

Khaki Woolen Winter Coat

I have a lot of coats. Not as many as I do dresses- but the coat section of the Wardroom can certainly hold it's own. The green sub-section of the coat section is actually quite extensive in itself. Here is a nice warm example....

Army green. Khaki green. Olive green. whatever you call this particular shade- I have always thought it is a great Winter colour. Throw in a light grey fluffy collar feature and you are really cooking with gas.

The collar on this coat takes up a lot more space than other fluffy collars I have come across. Starting at the neckline (where collars usually do) it swoops all the way down to the shoudler line.

Sadly the moths in my old house took a bit of a shine to this coat. There are a few patches where you can see it has become a meal and a half for some fashion struck moth. The holes aren't so bad as to render it unwearable- but enough to be annoying. Not much consellation- but at least they had good taste!

Creepy and Kooky

Before you say it I know. This dress screams Wednesday Adams. My collar and cuffs may be red instead of white- but there is a certain theme running through it.

This has been one of my favourite Winter dresses for a few years now. It's a wool blend and is easily teamed with thick black tights and boots. (As I was playing up the Adams family ties here it seemed more appropriate to go with mary-janes....)

I love the exaggerated collar and cuffs. I love the red stitching. I love the subtle pleats in the skirt but the best part of this dress is easily the rose buttons down the front. Actual tiny roses!

A li'l Japanese

This one time- I went to the Cornwall Park School Fair- and then had to talk about it in all my Frockstar posts cause I bought so much stuff there....

This skirt screams Japanese School girl anime. To me at least. Loud and clear. Grey and black plaid with button detail and a faux lace hem. It's quite high waisted - and a good length too. I have teamed it with black tights and top, and grey woolen platform boots.

These boots were a great find on trademe. They cost me an incredible $9.00 and are as light as a feather. I do not run the risk of anyone calling my twinkle toes in a hurry though. My flatmate has asked on a few occasions now how I manage to be the smallest person in the house and manage to make the most noise when walking around it. I don't call it stomping. I call it walking with purpose...

This is possibly the most Wintery outfit that has featured thus far on Frockstar. It does get me quite excited about the upcoming cooler months. Not only will I get to start wearing my favourites in a large collection of Vintage coats- but I know I will rediscover long lost items in the wardroom that gave way to Summer dresses back in October.

(I originally had a pair of black ear muffs on for the photo but it was too hot to wear them long enough to get a good photo. I imagine there will be an earmuff special at some point to make up for it...)

Avon Calling!

I would have been a great Avon lady in the 50's. Especially if it meant that I got to dress like this everyday! (And just quietly- who wouldnt be excited about social house calls with endless cups of tea and home baking while talking about make up?)

This little number is a NZ made Eastex original. I have attempted to research this particular brand as I have a few pieces now from their company- but there isn't a lot of info out there...

A dark cornflower blue 3 piece suit in wool with a cream fur collar. (Ermin? Ferret? I don't actually know the origins of this part of the garment. While I do not necessarily condone wearing fur I appreciate that items like this were produced in a very different time....)

It's been a while since this suit saw the light of day. Unfortunately for me- a family of moths decided it would make a decent dinner in the last few years. This has made the collar molt, and there are a few big holes in the jacket. It is actually very sad...

The outfit originally came into my possession from "Princess Nicole's recycled Wardrobe" on Dominon Rd circa 1999. I think it was around the $60.00 price range- although an outfit like this will always be more of an investment than anything else.

Jackie O- eat your heart out!

NB- I am now officially on the lookout for a pill box hat to go with this suit!
